"Brainport identity, a place where innovation, creativity, and people come together."
Mamiko Inamori, Associate Professor at Tokai University, visited Eindhoven in June 2025 to attend SmartCom 2025 at TU/e. She was immediately struck by the city's open atmosphere and unique combination of technology, design, art, and human connection, noting how it creates a truly inspiring, human-centered environment that defines the Brainport region.
She experienced Eindhoven's collaborative ecosystem firsthand, where high-tech campuses, universities, companies, and cultural hubs work together, offering conference organizers, researchers, and professionals rich opportunities for networking, inspiration, and collaboration.
Curious what made her experience truly stand out?

A researcher’s perspective on Eindhoven as a conference destination

Over the past few years, the Convention Bureau has made strong efforts on behalf of the region. The focus has not necessarily been on attracting as many conferences as possible, but rather on stimulating and securing the right conferences, those that align with Brainport’s innovation ecosystem. Although the Regio Deal period has concluded, the municipality continues to invest through Eindhoven365 to further embed Convention Bureau Brainport Eindhoven within the city marketing strategy.
The potential within the international conference market was always there. Thanks to the Regio Deal investment, we were able to professionally establish the Convention Bureau and actively pursue conference acquisition. In just three years, Convention Bureau Brainport Eindhoven has taken on a clear front-desk function, serving as the primary point of contact for all conference-related inquiries. In recent years, we have been involved in 154 conference bids and have successfully secured 57 conferences in the region. In the coming years, we will continue positioning the region as a leading conference destination. By 2028, we expect to have welcomed 17,000 visitors over the total period, generating an estimated economic impact of approximately €20 million.
We connect global knowledge networks with the unique Brainport ecosystem, where world-class universities, groundbreaking companies, and forward-thinking institutions collaborate side by side. You can read the full story about Convention Bureau Brainport Eindhoven’s efforts to position the region as Europe’s leading destination for high-tech and innovation conferences in the article by Brainport Development.

On November 26, the very first edition of Watt Matters in AI will take place in Microstad Eindhoven. This international conference focuses on a frequently overlooked aspect of artificial intelligence: its enormous energy consumption. Instead of exploring how we can apply AI, the central question here is: how can we make AI itself more energy-efficient?
Watt Matters in AI brings together experts from hardware, software, and data to address this complex issue from various perspectives. In the lead-up to the conference, we spoke with Pieter Hermans from Convention Bureau Brainport Eindhoven about the origins of this initiative and its significance for the region. An innovative approach that perfectly aligns with the innovative strength of Brainport Eindhoven.

In our role as support service, we provided essential advice, from coordinating hotel accommodations and site visits to organizing mobile daycare options and identifying ideal workshop venues. We also helped arrange bicycle rentals to enhance the attendee experience throughout Eindhoven.
Philips Stadion provided an inspiring backdrop for the event, creating a collaborative environment for nearly 800 participants. Alongside the main venue, workshops were held at the Neuron faculty building at Eindhoven University of Technology, while Grand Café De Lichttoren hosted the annual hackathon. With on-site childcare and a commitment to inclusivity, JuliaCon was designed to be accessible and welcoming for all.

The organizing team of the IEEE Medical Measurements & Applications Conference asked for our help with the bid and advice on, among other things, the location of the gala dinner. We proudly made a video of the three-day conference, organized in the heart of Brainport Eindhoven. This conference, which took place in the Conference Center of the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, brought together more than 250 participants from all over the world, including researchers, health professionals, technicians, and engineers.
Knowledge sharing and networking were central for three days. Participants exchanged ideas and worked together to promote innovations in healthcare systems and medical diagnostics. The conference provided a platform for three leading keynote speakers who shared their vision for the future of medical measurements and applications.
In addition, presentations were held by fifty invited speakers from various disciplines, who presented their expertise and research. There were also forty poster sessions where participants could show their ongoing research and findings. The social program of the conference offered ample opportunity for informal interaction and networking, including a pleasant BBQ and a stylish gala dinner.
Thanks to the efforts of Full Professor Massimo Mischi and his team, this symposium was a great success and proof that our region is perfectly suited to hosting such prestigious events. Last week, Ingeborg attended the annual ICCA France-Benelux & Mediterranean Chapter Meeting. The event brought together professionals from the international meetings industry across the France-Benelux and Mediterranean regions to exchange knowledge, share experiences and inspire one another.
The meeting offered a wealth of inspiring sessions and valuable networking opportunities. These are the five key takeaways we are bringing back:

Collaboration is the key to success. Every successful region, organisation and innovation is built on a strong network of people who support and strengthen one another.

Build a shared story. We are not competing with other meeting destinations but with other knowledge ecosystems. A strong and shared positioning makes all the difference.

Look beyond the costs of conferences. For associations, destination readiness is what matters. A destination should be scalable, resilient, future-proof and able to demonstrate real impact.

International conferences are a strategic tool. Inspiring examples from Barcelona, Paris and Milano-Cortina showed how conferences contribute to innovation, talent development, knowledge exchange and the international competitiveness of a region.

Strengthen international alliances. By working more closely with other regions and exploring opportunities such as sister city partnerships, we can create new opportunities for knowledge sharing and mutual growth.

We look back on an inspiring meeting full of valuable insights and open conversations. By participating in international events like this, we continue to learn, grow and innovate. Innovation is not only about technology. It is also about continuously developing ourselves and our region. That is exactly what we strive to showcase in Eindhoven.
